How strong is your willpower? Are you often disappointed in your failure to resist your lower urges? Your willpower, controlled by your prefrontal cortex, can both be strengthened with use, just as can your body’s muscles. The prefrontal cortex has been scientifically proven by neuroscientists to respond positively to meditation and exercise, versus watching TV which atrophies it.

Four techniques can help you strengthen your willpower: meditation, exercise, deep breathing, and taking right action. Meditation has been proven to be the most effective way to enhance focus and performance by building the prefrontal cortex. Exercise enhances willpower by the discipline required for consistent practice, as well as challenging the body to greater achievement in successive workouts. Deep, slow breathing calms the mind, the heart, and strengthens willpower, as does the discipline of consistently taking right action.

To further enhance your willpower, eliminate or reduce one-by-one willpower-sapping habits. Giving in to our lower urges ( TV, internet, video games, and porn; snacking and overeating; and chemical substance abuses) decreases consciousness and weakens willpower with each poor choice.

  1. A good way to help out with that, is creating something like a schedule with all the things you want and need to do and applying a due date/time, until you want to get it done. A simple "to do" list can be helpful. If you regularly look at it, you will be reminded of every little thing you planned and it's more likely that you actually do them. Have your phone remind you every day, if you tend to forget, you have that list.

  2. I see lot of people commenting here that they need willpower to even apply willpower techniques. Ofcource it takes a lil willpower to start at first. Here is a lil tip for you. Start with avoiding advertisement posters when you're driving. Or decide that you won't see number plate of vehicles on the road today. Decide any stupid thing it doesn't have to make sense. What matters is you resisted the urge.

  4. It's kind of strange to hear you say that video games rob you of your willpower. Sure, video game addictions will have a negative effect on you. But games can also be inspiring works of art, and that inspiration can really elevate you. It has been proven time and time again on Youtube that people can get inspired by games such as the Last of Us, or Journey. But you most likely know all of this stuff already. This is an old video after all.

  5. Just to test it I'm gonna get up and walk around the lake now, at 4:30 AM, in the rain. It's 40 km. Just walking 10k is boring. Cant imagine how this is gonna be. I'm kind of tired right now already.

  6. So to put it simply, it's all about dopamine management. If you don't flood your brain with dopamine every day, suddenly the little things in life seem so much more interesting
