Surviving Alone in Alaska

Heimo Korth is the last man standing in 19 million acres of Alaskan wilderness. His neighbors are polar bears and caribous. Say good bye to civilization and see how they do it in the arctic circle on the last frontier in America.

In 1980, Jimmy Carter established the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in the Alaskan Interior, cutting off 19 million acres of prime boreal wilderness from the mitts of fur trappers, oil tycoons, and would-be lodge owners alike. Only six families of white settlers were grandfathered in and allowed to keep cabins in the refuge—of them, only one still stays there year-round living off the land. His name is Heimo Korth, and he is basically the Omega Man of Americas Final Frontier.

  1. Wow … I was enjoying this for the first half of the video … Till Vice as usual – starts pulling their bullshit liberal agenda using Heimo to criticize modern or current society… Sorry but, you can't have a planet of 6 billion hunters…

  2. He's wrong about the new generation. His generation was still far, far away from the kind of lifestyle he lives. He's living like the indians and eskimos and such lived, an absolutely ancient type of living, in fact as ancient as can be, whereas the Western civilian (that probably about 99.9% of us watching this video are part of) we live in has lived in houses and on a larger scale, in cities for over 7000 years. There were people in ancient Greece that lived in a city all their life and couldn't live like this couple does.

The point is that while the vast majority will not ever live this way, there is still a .01% of us that will exile themselves to the wilderness. The spirit will live on. As small as it is.

  3. It's the natives that live off the land.everything they learn was taught by natives and they give Hemio north.all the the credit not without native no how.i think all the credit belongs to the natives .please don't try to take all the credit.

  4. If you think about it living out there isnt so bad at all. Atleast they dont live a life like a labor zombie, they're not stuck in the social norms where public majority favors their emotions over voice of reason. In a Civilized society life has seem to lost its purpose only into capitalism.

  5. 'Only good 'til the death of our last child.' So it doesn't carry over to their grand kids, this permit. In 60 plus years they'll have no humans there to deal with and can finally drill. That implies that they think humans will still be using fossil fuels. <facepalm>
They're either very pessimistic or they're gonna make sure oil stays on top.
