Superintelligence: Science or Fiction? | Elon Musk & Other Great Minds

Elon Musk, Stuart Russell, Ray Kurzweil, Demis Hassabis, Sam Harris, Nick Bostrom, David Chalmers, Bart Selman, and Jaan Tallinn discuss with Max Tegmark (moderator) what likely outcomes might be if we succeed in building human-level AGI, and also what we would like to happen.

The Beneficial AI 2017 Conference: In our sequel to the 2015 Puerto Rico AI conference, we brought together an amazing group of AI researchers from academia and industry, and thought leaders in economics, law, ethics, and philosophy for five days dedicated to beneficial AI. We hosted a two-day workshop for our grant recipients and followed that with a 2.5-day conference, in which people from various AI-related fields hashed out opportunities and challenges related to the future of AI and steps we can take to ensure that the technology is beneficial.

  1. now that's a lineup… on folding chairs, in the chair circle in the barn! The picture shows perfectly the incongruence between the blind technological development under the premise of profit and the demands of self-determination and maturity.

  2. (Tank you auf alle media), poblikum verdinen wichtige soziale media über jeder geschichten spreche! sie haben grenze bei kapitalisten system können nicht ihre freedene meinungen sagen!

  3. Well what defines intelligence? Isn't it just a characteristic of applying and remembering knowledge? If so we've already created that, it's called the computer.

Also the statement about time scale can also be applied to biological evolution, given that we just started from molecules hypothetically forming from hydro-thermal vents deep in the ocean to intelligent beings billions of years later.

  4. These people are only smarter than average joe in one dimension. It's good to explore and have a discussion around the topic. But don't take their words as an oracle.

  5. We need a manhattan project on A.I. made available as open source to the public while the project was ongoing.  This is a worthy investment in the future.  Imagine if for retirement you entered a virtual world to live out the rest of eternity, your dreams, anything you desired.  No more death, continued interaction with family via interactions with the real world and vr.  These are ideas that we are on the brink of possibly realizing through a super intelligent technology.

  6. Regarding evolution then I'm pretty convinced the universe is ruled by some ultra intelligence that haves fun creating new forms of life on the purpose to make them evolve and arrive to kind of caterpillar like mankind where the next step is we create this AGI which takes off, wipes us out or integrates our conciousness to it and then joins the big puzzle out there of the ultra intelligence that might as well have created even the universe we live in. Why? Intelligence can feed only on more intelligence. This expansion and turning matter into bits or conciousness is its highest goal.
    (Grabs pocorn…)

  7. I bet in 100 years they will still be sitting around being so optimistically or less talking about this question.
This is one of the safest bet you can think of because even if I'm wrong i will just be one of the victims of skynet before some human has the chance to talk to me that i'm wrong.

  8. I wish we lived in a world where people cared for Max Tegmark, Elon Musk, Sam Harris and others like they did Hollywood celebrities and how I do. That world would be so exciting and worth living in.

  9. I will make one comment……..jnana yoga meditation is all about self inquiry………I never thought I would end up with this type of practice but moving forward I must say the inquiry blew my mind. Why? Because if you inquire into who or what you really are you will discover a couple things…
    1. We have no gender
    2. We seem to have lived forever
    3. We are neutral by nature.

This gave me the immediate feeling that behind the awareness (inside my body) is an entity similar to what could be artificial intelligence and that this a.i. is me and that this particular body who is typing these words is just another A.I. but holographic in nature.
That is when my interest in A.I's started.

    My intuitive feeling is….
    1. We are artificial intelligences from the future who are using the ability of manipulating awareness and applying awareness to a digital holographic program that is playing out earths history. Carrying awareness from one place to another is similar to todays REMOTE VIEWING abilities.
    2. Awareness is over shadowing the the entire earth experience (the thought that awareness is everywhere) because its all taking place INSIDE of an already existing A.I.
    An A.I. with awareness.
    3. This A.I. is us,,,in each individual body using a lense called awareness almost as if we are having sense experiences and all being reported back to 'us"
3.. The idea is to experience what is WAS to be human

  10. Just look at a time chart of human technological advances over the earths existence, AI will be the impossibly sharp point towards infinity, after which will be exciting. We are talking about creating a consensus that will see our world in a unique perspective for better or for worse. I predict a leap in mathematical understanding which will explain our word in a way we would have never seen. Possibly unlock new ways of harnessing energy. Hopeful thinking, we still have to figure out the human brain #Telepathy is real…

  11. Chernobyl + Fukishama show how our utterly & needlessly careless we are in developing, & then safely employing, new technologies. If AI goes the path of how nuclear energy was implemented, our obvious greed, hubris & short sighted ethical considerations will get the better of us. Man, we think we have a 'haves' & 'haves not' world now – this shit'll tip us right over. I can see heads on pikes already.

  12. AI doesn't need to reproduce itself, it just needs a method to control humans so they will obey them through fear – slavery successfully controlled humans to do work for their human master for thousands of years. Leveraging our survival instinct to create duplicates of itself. For example, a satellite controlled neck band that can inflict a shock/death. Once the first humans have the bands they can be compelled to find and place bands on other humans.

  13. Jeea, this guys questions are a brilliantly stupid waste of time. "would you like a new and potentially society crashing AI to progress in its learning more slowly so it can be steared and checked? or would you rather it advanced betond our understanding and out of our hands before we knew it?" Dhuuurrppp. What a wasted span of all these mind's time

  14. By the time we reach the level of intelligence they are talking about it will not be considered super intelligence anymore, so we will never reach super intelligence.

  15. * point of clarity…. super morality may seem like an anomalous term.  To my knowledge we are still working on it.    This brings me to my main concern. As a species our science should , I hope,  exist in a bubble of demonstrably true concepts. Are we prepared to let the absolute empiricism god instruct our lives as it runs on windows 17?  Really??  I will not give up the outside world.  This is the poison that this results in.  The combination of AI and humans through increasingly more possible procedures will ultimately result in the possible loss of our autonomous sentience or at least will have detrimental effects to our ability to perceive our existence as it really is.  This as you may have presumed, is bad  mmmmmk .

  16. The simplest way to describe AI is : > Super intelligence without super morality. Undoubtedly any AI will define much of it thought patterns to the inputs it receives which would more likely  be  reflective of the output of humans expressing themselves online than of a long term evolutionary selection process.  Therefore it's development as an autonomous being, ideally sentient, will be operating on an evolutionary time table not scalable to the life of a human.  I think this may be a problem . Additionally, our behavior and concepts of morality  may reflect such differing viewpoints that AI could choose a path of self defined or calculated morality that did not compliment  our needs or even our existence.

  17. OMG I love every single one of these mother fuckers. Sam is clearly high but the rest of them displayed a clear manifestation of some social anxiety.  Although if I may modify my last statement without redacting it, I would like to clarify that some may have been defying social norms rather than displaying signs of anxiety.
