
Mindfulness Meditation for Health and Happiness
Mindfulness is a powerful way to live in the present moment. Sometimes we find ourselves obsessing in remanence about our past mistakes and the opportunities we missed. It consumes our thoughts and we forget that the present moment needs our attention and the future is something to build towards and look forward to.

There are people who aim at achieving a heightened level of mindfulness through meditation. It has been proven through scientific research that one can increase their baseline level of happiness through daily meditation. Mindfulness has been shown to stimulate the middle prefrontal cortex associated with self-observation and fostering specific attentional mechanisms. Mindfulness helps with planning, decision making, and social behavior. Its benefits may also include emotional regulation, great experiences, and fulfillment.
We have a tendency to attack and blame ourselves for things both in and out of our control. What if we could turn this tendency around, treating ourselves with a mindful awareness that we too are human and so deserving of our own loving-kindness? Approach this hurt-filled moment and take notice of how we feel about ourselves and how we speak to ourselves.
In being mindful of the feelings involved when we perceive ourselves as missing our own or other’s expectations, we can become aware of their immediate origins, historic projections, and future effects. This can replace pushing them away or avoid them altogether. With the courage to stay in this present moment, we can breathe, feel our muscular tightness, accept what we are feeling. We can learn the habitual patterns that trap us in our own lack of self-compassion, we can imagine new patterns and free ourselves to move forward. Breathe into this feeling and sit with it for a moment or two.
